Gynecomastia

Under certain circumstances there can be an enlargement of the male breast (gynaecomasty). This enlargement can be due to a real enlargement of the gland or due to the increase of the fatty tissue (pseudeogynaecomasty). This can be caused by certain medications but will not disappear by itself. There are different ways to remove the enlargement. It needs an operation with general anaesthesia and may include a short stay in the hospital. Sometimes drains have to be used for the wound secretion. Very tight cloths for compression have to be worn for 4 weeks after the operation. Sometimes there is bruising, swelling and numbness, which diasspear after a few days and then the patient will feel fit and well again and can return to work (depending on the job). In rare cases the costs will be covered by the insurance.
